People are the most complex of all resources that a manager or supervisor has to deal with. In order to work effectively with people, managers must learn to adapt their style to a particular person’s current situation and disposition. Managers must learn how and when to choose directing, coaching, supporting and delegating. They must also develop the skills on how to effectively carry out each of these styles.
These are the topics that were covered during the 1-day People Management Workshop that we ran for Robinsons Retail last March 22. It was specifically designed to help their leaders diagnose the current developmental levels of their employees, choose the correct approach to dealing with them and learn how to effectively use conversations to further develop the skills and performance of each employee.
Through self-assessments, various case studies, and role playing, participants were able to gain a better understanding of the different leadership styles. They learned how to match their leadership style to what a specific employee or situation calls for. They were also given a chance to see how to effectively use the GROW model in coaching employees.
